ANASTASIA SIMONIN & KAZUO YAGI MARSDEN
Anastasia Simonin holds a degree from the Beaux-Arts d'Angers and went on to complete two years of study at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. Kazuo Yagi Marsden graduated from the Beaux-Arts de Marseille in 2020, which he joined after two years of medical studies in Montpellier. Together, their work has been shown at La Villette (Paris), the Salon de Montrouge, galerie Prima (Paris), Kommet (Lyon) and Le Commun (Geneva). They have led several site-based projects: at the Vénasque refuge in the Pyrenees, at Fort Queyras, and with pupils at a primary school in the Var. Residents at the Ateliers de la Ville de Marseille since 2024, they joined the Documents d'Artistes PACA network the following year.
Anastasia Simonin and Kazuo Yagi Marsden live and work in Marseille. Their collaboration began in 2021 around woodworking and a shared interest in the sciences, drawing on stories of coexistence and cohabitation — a way of foregrounding points of encounter and friction with their environments, against a worldview that separates, isolates and hierarchizes lives. They carve wood as their central medium, combining it with other materials in a constant dialogue between intention and matter; the bodily dimension of their sculptures seeps into the very walls of exhibition spaces, blurring the boundaries between space, object and body. They draw on scientific imagery — biological drawings, anatomical diagrams, photographs of living things — for their close-up viewpoints, their way of revealing what escapes the naked eye; translated into volume, these images become carnal and fluid, recovering what the scientific gaze had once frozen.
