GERMAIN MARGUILLARD

Overview

Germain Marguillard (b. 1997) lives and works in Aubervilliers, France. His sculptural practice explores the relationships between scientific knowledge, systems of belief, and spiritual imaginaries. Drawing on physics, astronomy, and biology, as well as ornamental and ritual traditions, he develops a vocabulary of forms in which geometric precision enters into dialogue with the organic world.

Ceramics and wood, often charred, occupy a central place in his work. Subjected to various processes of transformation, these materials give rise to sculptures and installations with dark surfaces, marked by engraved or modelled motifs. Spirals, rosettes, and vegetal structures compose a visual language on the threshold of abstraction, evoking scientific instruments, ritual objects, and archaeological fragments.

By combining the visual languages of science and the sacred, Germain Marguillard blurs the boundaries between them and challenges the certainties of rational thought. His sculptures reveal connections between different systems of knowledge and belief.

A graduate of the École européenne supérieure d’art de Bretagne in 2021, Marguillard has presented solo exhibitions at Passerelle, Centre d’art contemporain, Brest (2023), and L’H du Siège, Centre d’art contemporain, Valenciennes (2025). His work has also been exhibited at Frac Bretagne, the Grande Halle de la Villette, the Salon de Montrouge, and Vent des Forêts. A finalist for the Prix du Frac Bretagne – Art Norac in 2024, he was also commissioned to produce a work for the collection of the Observatoire de l’Espace at CNES (French National Centre for Space Studies), held at Les Abattoirs, Musée – Frac Occitanie Toulouse.
