MORGANE ELY
Morgane Ely’s work is rooted in a paradoxical relationship with feminisms and patriarchies, but it is precisely this paradox that fuels it in substance. Feminism here does not oppose femininity, nor even hyper-femininity. The figure of the pin-up can pilot an alien spaceship, using her sensuality as a weapon of combat. Yet the image being consumed is driven by a highly precise technique: once inked, it is revealed on a wooden surface meticulously carved with a gouge.
A tension unfolds in this dual temporality: Morgane Ely uses screenshots or paparazzi photos—images captured in an instant—yet they are stretched out by the long hours required to engrave them. The halftone patterns embed the image in a vibrating temporality, even if everything appears suspended in stillness. Movement seeps into the static image, and the moiré effect creates visual flickers reminiscent of those seen on screens.
Through this hypnotic and shifting quality, Morgane Ely aims to destabilize cultural representations by deconstructing binary distinctions: art/entertainment, sexuality/politics, popular culture/academic
