JULIE CHEVASSUS

Overview

Julie Chevassus (b. 1997, based in Marseille) is a graduate of the Beaux-Arts de Marseille and recipient of the 2024 Clim’Art Painting Prize. Her figurative paintings construct an enigmatic universe from salvaged metal objects, often discarded fragments from other artists’ studios. Worn, twisted, rusted, these remnants become the protagonists of images where still life, imaginary architecture, and surreal landscapes intertwine.

“I like to play with the boundaries of the identifiable by painting undefined objects and spaces, with the aim of creating a zone of uncertainty for the viewer.”

Working on wood panels prepared with casein, Julie contrasts the softness of human or animal bodies with the apparent harshness of metal, exploring tensions between materiality, scale, and narrative.
